Explanation of Condition

Ulcer in the first part of the small bowel. Occasionally these may perforate, leading to severe inflammation of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis), usually requiring an operation to repair the defect.They may also erode a blood vessel, causing severe internal bleeding (gastrointestinal haemorrhage).

Guidance

Aceptable if benign (i.e. not caused by cancer). Proton pump inhibitor therapy acceptable (e.g. omeprazole, lansoprazole). Unacceptable if associated with cancer.
