Explanation of Condition

Genetic disorder leading to excessive absorption of iron from the gut, which then accumulated in the liver, spleen, heart, pancreas, bone marrow and other organs. The haemochromatosis gene is extremely common in white Northern Europeans (around 1 in 10), and the severity of the condition varies considerably from person to person.

Guidance

Discuss with MO. Acceptable unless evidence of cardiac failure, liver function tests greater than twice upper limit of normal, or pancreatic insufficiency requiring insulin.
