Explanation of Condition

Member of the herpes virus family. It may cause a mild febrile illness or be completely asymptomatic in normal individuals. However, it can cause life-threatening infection in stem-cell transplant recipients.

Guidance

Accept at recruitment.

Allow 2 weeks from recovery before donation if evidence of acute infection.

If identified as CMV IgM postitive at work-up, the harvest centre should request CMV DNA PCR, and the transplant centre must be informed.
