Explanation of Condition

Seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These can be secondary (e.g. as a result of a brain injury), or primary, where a precipitating cause is not found.

Acceptability at Recruitment

ACCEPT if seizure-free for the previous 12 months WITHOUT medication.

DEFER if currently requiring medication or seizures are related to an underlying organic pathology (eg Cerebrovascular Disease, traumatic brain injury, Brain Tumour)

Acceptability at CT / Work-Up

ACCEPT if seizure-free for the past 12 months WITHOUT medication.

DEFER if currently requiring medication.


Guidance

Unacceptable if has had an epileptic event in the last year or if there is an underlying organic pathology. Otherwise acceptable.

Justification for guidance

There is a potential increased risk for perioperative seizures due to the pre-existent condition or the proconvulsant effect of anaesthetic drugs, and also due to electrolyte changes experience during apheresis.

Anticonvulsant medications may cause abnormalities in blood counts, which may exacerbate those seen after PBSC.
