Explanation of Condition

Virus causing severe depletion of a particular type of lymphocyte which are a vital part of the immune system (CD4 or T-helper cells). Untreated, infected individuals eventually succumb to infection or cancer.

Current Infection

Risk of transmission. Must not donate.

Current Sexual Partner

RECRUITMENT - Unacceptable

CT/WORK-UP - Generally unacceptable. However, the donor may be accepted at the discretion of the requesting transplant centre.

Previous Sexual Contact

Must not donate if less than twelve months from sexual contact with someone infected with HIV, or had oral, vaginal or anal sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown, or who themselves may be at a higher risk of contracting HIV.
