Explanation of Condition

Common parasitic infection from cat faeces or eating undercooked meat. It can be spread by transfusion. It causes fever, rash and swollen glands. It is rarely symptomatic in normal individuals, but may cause severe disease in those with a compromised immune system and foetal malformations in pregnant women. See also Toxoplasmosis

Guidance

Testing outcomes and recommendations

1) Toxoplasmosis IgM = negative AND Toxoplasmosis IgG = positive or negative

Donor can be cleared

2) Toxoplasmosis IgM = positive AND Toxoplasmosis IgG = positive or negative

Samples should be sent to Toxoplasma Reference Unit (Public Health Wales)

MUST NOT DONATE if confirmed current infection at the time of donation.

Once the infection is cured, no deferral time is needed although it is recommended to inform the TC.
