Explanation of Condition

Infection causing fever, rash and swollen glands. It is rarely severe in normal individuals, but may cause severe disease in those with a compromised immune system, as well as foetal malformations if a pregnant woman is infected. See also Toxoplasmosis

Guidance

Testing outcomes and recommendations

1) Toxoplasmosis IgM = negative AND Toxoplasmosis IgG = positive or negative Donor can be cleared

2) Toxoplasmosis IgM = positive AND Toxoplasmosis IgG = positive Samples should be sent to Toxoplasma Reference Unit (Public Health Wales)

Repeat IgG and IgM Dye Test Toxo PCR

3) Toxoplasmosis IgM = positive AND Toxoplasmosis IgG = negative

Repeat IgG and IgM Dye Test Toxo PCR

Results should be discussed with reference laboratory to determine onset of infection.

Donors should be deferred for 6 months from onset of infection. If there is clinical urgency this can be shortened to 3 months in discussion with Toxoplasma reference unit and transplant centre.

Inform TC in all positive cases (IgG and IgM)
