Explanation of Condition

Virus causing severe depletion of a particular type of lymphocyte which are a vital part of the immune system (CD4 or T-helper cells). Untreated, infected individuals eventually succumb to infection or cancer.

Guidance

Current Infection

Risk of transmission. Must not donate.

Current Sexual Partner

RECRUITMENT - Unacceptable

VT/WORK-UP - Generally unacceptable. However, the donor may be accepted at the discretion of the requesting transplant centre.

Previous Sexual Contact

Acceptable if more than 3 months from last sexual contact with infected partner.

However, this time period may be shortened at the discretion of the requesting transplant centre.
