Explanation of condition
Barrett’s oesophagus is a form of metaplasia, where the normal squamous epithelium of the oesophagus is replaced by columnar epithelium with intestinal features due to chronic acid reflux. It is often associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Barrett's oesophagus carries a small risk of progression to dysplasia and oesophageal cancer and therefore surveillance monitoring is undertaken. For this reason, Barrett's oesophagus is an unacceptable condition.
