Explanation of Condition
Failure of the body to regulate sugar entry into cells that need it. Caused either by failure of insulin production in the pancreas (type 1 diabetes) or insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes).
Guidance
Type 1 diabetes is unacceptable at recruitment or VT.
Type 2 diabetes is acceptable at recruitment only if diet controlled. Not acceptable if on anti-diabetic tablets or insulin injections at recruitment.
Type 2 diabetes is acceptable at VT stage if diabetes is well controlled on anti-diabetic tablets. Not acceptable if on insulin injections. Discuss each case with Medical Officer.
Other injectable medications such as GLP-1 injections may be acceptable. These donors should not stop their GLP-1 injections for a BM donation so would only be for PBSC donation. Please discuss with MO.
