At the VT stage, since a donor cannot proceed with donation while pregnant, it is important to assess whether the waiting period for donation will affect their plans to conceive. If it will cause an unacceptable delay to family planning, the donor should not continue with the donation process. Discuss with MO if unsure.

Guidance

There is no deferral period between donation and trying to conceive for male donors.

For female donors undertaking PBSC, it is recommended to wait four weeks before trying to conceive to ensure that patient engraftment has occurred. This is in case a subsequent donation is requested by the transplant centre. However, the decision to wait is ultimately up to the donor.

For a DLC donation, this does not apply.

At the VT stage, since a donor cannot proceed with donation while pregnant, it is important to assess whether the waiting period for donation will affect their plans to conceive. If it will cause an unacceptable delay to family planning, the donor should not continue with the donation process. Discuss with MO if trying to conceive at VT or workup stage.
