Explanation of Condition
Increase in haemoglobin above the normal limits expected. This is a normal response to conditions where oxygen levels are low, such as at altitude.

Guidance
Acceptable if benign cause, e.g. altitude, and haemoglobin is within normal limits at time of harvest.
Defer donors with abnormally high haemoglobin at time of medical, due to a higher risk of leukostasis when taking G-CSF.
Unacceptable if confirmed or suspected myeloproliferative disease, if secondary to lung disease, or if cause unknown.
