Explanation of Condition

Antibodies against molecules found on the surface of red blood cells, white cells or other cells. These may be formed spontaneously, because of exposure to a foetus, or because of blood transfusion.

These antibodies rarely cause problems unless the affected individual receives a blood transfusion or carries a foetus with the respective blood group.

There is a risk that such antibodies may cause problems when giving a transplant to a recipient.

Guidance

Discuss with medical officer.

Do not accept if anti-neutrophil antibodies. Red cell alloantibodies acceptable, but inform transplant centre.

Other antibodies may be associated with autoimmune disease and need to be considered on an individual basis.
