Explanation of Condition

Protrusions of an organ or part of the gut through a weakness in its containing compartment. Most commonly this is a protrusion of part of the gut through the abdominal wall, but can be protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragmatic hiatus (hiatus hernia), protrusion of part of the bowel through an abnormal defect in the diaphragm (diaphragmatic hernia), or (very rarely) protrusion of the brain through the base of the skull (cerebellar herniation).
