Guidance

UNACCEPTABLE if progressive disease and / or global renal function is impaired.

Discuss all cases with medical officer

Acute nephritis

Acceptable if more than 5 years have past since episode, renal function is normal, and cause is not otherwise a reason for deferral, e.g. vasculitis. If obvious infectious pyelonephritis, then donation may be earlier at the discretion of the medical officer. Inform transplant centre.

Nephrotic syndrome

Acceptable if five years have passed since episode, if illness occured in isolation (i.e. not secondary to malignancy or associated with autoimmunity, HIV or hepatitis) and if treated with steroids alone. Minimal change disease on renal biopsy is acceptable. Not acceptable if relapsed disease or required immunosuppressive therapy other than corticosteroids.

Renal Colic/Kidney Stones

Unacceptable if under investigation. Must not donate if currently having exacerbation.

Chronic nephritis/glomulonephritis

Unacceptable regardless of cause.

Polycystic Kidney Disease

Acceptable if renal function is normal or mildly impaired Discuss with anaesthetist at medical if undergoing GA for BMH

Other chronic renal conditions

Discuss with MO. Should be acceptable if renal function is normal or mildly impaired.
