Guidance

Scabies is commonly treated with two courses of topical cream applied a week apart. Scabies is considered acceptable for stem cell donation if the donor has completed both courses of treatment as prescribed, and at least 24 hours have passed since the final dose of medication. The itch can persistent for a few weeks after the mites have been eliminated.

Explanation of condition

Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash. The main symptom is severe itching, particularly at night, along with red bumps or blisters, often appearing in areas such as the hands, wrists, elbows, and genital region. The mites spread through close physical contact with an infected person or by sharing contaminated bedding or clothing. Scabies is treatable with medications that kill the mites, such as topical permethrin or oral ivermectin.
