Explanation of Condition

Mental health disorder characterised by a breakdown of though processes and poor emotional responsiveness.

Donors with active schizophrenia may not be able to give fully informed consent. Potential donors with non-controlled schizophrenia may suffer a breakdown and required urgent medical advice (admission, clinic appointment) with its subsequent complications (missing pre-donation medical assessment or donation, rejection of G-CSF ...) Since it is not possible to assess every donor and ensure that they are mentally stable to proceed with donation, the general rule is to not allow donations from these patients. These restrictions are very strict to avoid situations that can compromise donation and put in risk both donor's and patient's life.
